Tuition classes take place in my workshop in Bollington, on the edge of the Peak District. I have a Jet 3520B and an Axminster AW1416VS. The workshop is equipped with dust collection, microclene ambient air filtration and a broad range of tools and equipment.
I teach beginner, intermediate and advanced levels with courses tailored to suit your specific requirements and skill level.
Beginners courses generally start with some theory:- Workshop safety; Parts of the lathe and woodturning terminology; Types of tools and their uses; Mounting a piece of wood between centres and in a chuck. Then we move on to practical hands-on stuff:- Basic turning with gouges and chisels; Woodturning exercises and finally one or two turned pieces depending on the progress made.
Intermediate courses are more tailored to individual requirements and can cover a range of different aspects of woodturning such as:- Care and sharpening of tools; Mounting work on the lathe, Bowl Turning; Turning Hollow Forms; Turning natural edged goblets and vessels; Colouring and decorating work; Off centre turning and other topics to suit the student.
Advanced courses are tailored around an individual’s skill levels and are generally aimed at particular aspects of turning the student feels appropriate.
All tuition is One to One and my rates are as follows:-
½ day tuition £80.00.
1 day’s tuition £130.00.
2 and 3 day courses are also available, prices on application.
All equipment, tools and materials are supplied but where possible I recommend you bring your own tools.

Demonstrations at Shows
For Show demonstrations I can provide my own lathe and materials and require approx a 3m x 3m covered area and a power supply. These demos are becoming and more popular and are a great crowd pleaser. People love to see the shavings flying off and the “Turner’s Art” being revealed. If you are organising a show and are interested please contact me directly for show rates.
